Global Game Jam Melbourne 2025

I took part in my first Global Game Jam on the 24th – 26th of January. It was an incredible experience, and I am very glad that I took part. I will definitely be returning next year!
I was lucky enough to work on two games. Bubble Hell is a 2-4 player battle shooter, where players shoot bubbles to trap their opponents, and shoot pins to burst incoming bubbles.
Awawa Adventure: Don’t Hydrate the Hydrax was a Foddian climbing game, but inverted. You are a Hyrax trapped in a bubble, trying to descend as far under the ocean as possible.
Creating music and SFX for both these games was great fun, and I feel very grateful to get an inside peek at how games are made start to finish; I generally come into the process at a later stage, so seeing a game emerge from absolutely nothing was magical, and has inspired me to continue getting familiar with the basics of Unity.
I am very proud that I was able to use FMOD for Bubble Hell; I had set that as my goal for the event, as while I have tooled around in FMOD myself, unfortunately no projects have utilised it as yet. To get a project up and running in such a short time was a great challenge, and I am grateful to programmers Zac Cubitt and Cat Ater for their cooperation, knowledge, and skill.
I’m still buzzing from the event, and celebrated that fact by creating a walkthrough video of the FMOD session I created, find it at the bottom of the page.
A huge thanks to everyone that made the jam happen; IGDA Melbourne for organising, SAE Institue for hosting, the City of Port Phillip and FMOD for sponsoring.
Of course a big thanks to my teammates, whom without their wouldn’t have been a game to make music for…
